As we move forward into the New Year it is most wise for us to consider just what our expectations for this New Year might rightly be.  In doing do, I would like to draw your attention to the basic statement that drives our City.  Surely, you have seen this statement many times.  Without a doubt, many of you, like myself, may have sort of grappled with this basic statement while not really grasping its meaning.  The words are as follows: Taking Responsibility Together to Provide Superior Services.  Those are seven powerful words that in reality mean that when Citizens in Montgomery take responsibility together we can expect to receive superior services in return.  It is this give and take that prevails in all that goes on at City Hall.

So when we consider just what our expectations for the New Year will be I can say, without hesitation, that it is the continued practice of our Mission Statement that will continue to have us working together with caring dedication of all who serve Montgomery through their commitments on Committees and Boards.  For the third year in a row there was no hesitation in locating a new group of twenty-seven citizens applying and being accepted to participate in the 2010 Montgomery Citizens’ Leadership Academy with initiation to take place about the time you read this.  This means another 27 Montgomery citizens will become immersed in what makes Montgomery “go” and how they are willing to pay a fee to do so.  Montgomery holds a solid citizenry reflecting our valued diversity and wide array of stakeholders.  It is a wise community that understands how to take responsibility to provide superior services.

So, as we continue into a New Year I believe it is more important now than ever to take a close look at our City of Montgomery’s Mission Statement.  It really has meaning for all of us.  There is a balance there.
